I have the same problem. I put out critter food to keep them away from the bird food. I found this article on how to keep squirrels out of feeders. http://backyardbirdwatcher.com/page180.html
Now they have these cool feeders that spin when the squirrels weight a motor forcing them off. I found one at amazon.
I adore squirrels & have very squirrel-friendly feeders all over my yard. I buy peanuts & special food for them, too...they're so entertaining! Oh, & the cats like them, too...they think looking out the windows at squirrels & chippies is CAT-TV. *vbg*
I love the picture. We have had 3 squirrel proof feeders. I think the squirrels love them the best. More of a challenge for them, but once they figure it out, no problem. The feeders only keep the birds away.
See, I don't have this problem. For some reason our neighborhood doesn't have many squirrels. However, the birds like to eat the cat food I put out for the stray cats in our neighborhood. *G*
I have a few squirrel proof feeders and they work very well. Then again, we feed our birds on our 2nd story porch so if the squirrel tries to hack into the feeder he has a lonnng way down to fall on the ground!

Squirrels seem to figure ways to the food, even if it death-defying gymnastic moves. Great picture!
